St. Georg Austrian High School Libraries

School Library

Before 1988, small libraries existed in various parts of the school. Their merger in 1988 marked the first step towards today's media centre, the large Sankt Georg School Library.

Austrian Library Istanbul

After the Austrian Cultural Forum Istanbul moved to its new premises in Yeniköy, its library was rarely used because of the distance. To reach a wider audience, the idea emerged of combining it with the Sankt Georg School Library and establishing an Austrian Library under the roof of Sankt Georg Austrian High School. With the consent of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cultural Forum's library moved to its new premises at Sankt Georg in 2007 and began operating as the Austrian Library Istanbul .

Austrian Libraries

The Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs supports Austrian Libraries operating at 65 centres worldwide. They offer students and interested readers various opportunities to engage with Austrian culture in person or online.

Established from 1989 onwards, Austrian Libraries now operate at 65 centres in around 30 countries, mainly in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Each library is hosted by a local institution in its country. By exchanging information on topics relevant to local and regional needs, they offer an innovative and flexible way to put Austrian cultural policy into practice.

The libraries aim to inform local communities about Austrian literature, history and contemporary cultural policy. Their collections contain a total of 400,000 books. In addition to library services, they organise tours, readings, lectures, music, film and video evenings, exhibitions, recitals, language practice sessions and symposia. These activities allow Austrian culture to be represented even in cities without an Austrian embassy or cultural forum, making the libraries cultural centres for people interested in Austria.

Serving an average of 250,000 people each year and managed by local partners, these cultural and media centres are a focal point for cultural exchange. The success of the Austrian Libraries initiative has enabled expansion beyond its initial target regions. New libraries in Israel, Türkiye, the Caucasus and Central Asia have made cultural interaction possible across a wider area.
